Stand Off (2013)

Stand Off (2013)

Small time robbery. Big time mess. Good Film! This first and foremost is a really funny comedy. Just seeing the events unfold on its own is really funny and entertaining to watch but when mixed with the dialog it makes it that much more fun to watch. This movie combines the best of British crime movies with American comedy. I liked it. Overall, very entertaining and very much worth seeing. In a misguided attempt to protect his family and pay back gambling debts to the local Mobster, Jimbo robs a fish market, which is coincidentally owned by the same Mobster. On the run, Jimbo is cornered in a local curio shop, where he takes hostage an assortment of colorful characters, including Maguire, who may be his illegitimate father. Surrounded by the Police, the SAS, and the Mobster's crew, the young man must find a way out of his precarious predicament with the help of his oddball captives.

I expected a little more from a film but it was to safely played to be anything more then just time filler. the problem for me was that it was quite similiar to the far superior Van Damme film JVCD. the film is well acted but the characters are very thin and are unable to offer anything deeper. Fraser is likable but the promise of a two dimensional quickly unfolds as a boring subplot for him. Colm Meaney has always been a strong actor with comedy skills but he can't even add to a film this slowly created. the direction is quite pedestrian which Terry George also helped write. the showing of a fun irish caper should of been fun and something quite different. the characters aren't eventful and don't allow any of them to shine through. the film could of been something Guy Richie would of created but this film lacks the stand out characters. there are some fun moments but it all adds to nothing. Brendan Fraser normally creates some fun but forgettable films but here this film isn't memorable at the least. I really would have liked a film with well rounded characters and a plot worthy of the time invested. I thought this would be a uncovered gem instead of a direct to dvd forgettable adventure

The poster, and title, for this movie is really misleading, it makes it seem like an action packed movie. Brendan Fraser and Colm Meaney are both holding guns yet both never, at any moment, in the film actually use a gun. I suppose, for marketing purposes, it's easier to have a poster with guys holding guns, and changing the title to Stand Off, than it is to tell the truth about what the film is. It is a hostage comedy with minimal action, and it's a pretty lame one at that. The script feels like it, barely, got out of the rough draft stage before they decided to film it. The film is completely inconsistent with its tonal shifts. You don't know what it wants to be, so it really has some severe identity issues that really cripples the film right from the start. Even if there hadn't been those issues, the comedy isn't even that good to begin with and, again, it seems like the script didn't get past the rough draft and was filmed as such without making corrections or improvements. The cast isn't bad at all, but there's hardly any chemistry between them. Individually, they're fine. as a whole, not so much. There's also unnecessary subplots that just dilute the point the film wants to make, though I'm not sure what that point is. Perhaps the subplots were there to distract you from the fact that there really IS no point to this film. The film has its moments, but are they really enough to make up for the fact that the movie feels incomplete? No, absolutely not. But I never really thought the film was bad at all, but it wasn't good either. It's below average at best. I just think if more work was spent on fleshing out the script, making the jokes better and having a consistent tone it would've been much better. As it stands, it's just below average and it's the type of film that I would end up forgetting by this same time tomorrow night.
